The journey of life

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Yesterday was Yom Kippur – a day when Jews around the world atone for their sins and seek to deeply connect with God. One of the passages in my prayer book is very meaningful to me. It speaks about the journey of life and how we move through it learning our lessons and growing.  I think its wisdom is a direct hit, revealing what life is about. I’d like to share it with you:

Birth is a beginning
And death a destination.
And life is a journey:
From childhood to maturity
And youth to age;
From innocence to awareness
And ignorance to knowing;
From foolishness to discretion
And then, perhaps, to wisdom;
From weakness to strength
Or strength to weakness –
And, often, back again;
From health to sickness
And back, we pray, to health again;
From offense to forgiveness,
From loneliness to love,
From joy to gratitude,
From pain to compassion,
And grief to understanding –
From fear to faith;
From defeat to defeat to defeat –
Until, looking backward or ahead,
We see that victory lies
Not at some high place along the way,
But in having made the journey, stage by stage,
A sacred pilgrimage.
Birth is a beginning
And death a destination.
And life is a journey,
A sacred pilgrimage –
To life everlasting.

This is a time of great change on many levels. People are realizing that the old systems don’t work, and the present values are shallow. I’m coaching more and more people who are in transition, looking to find where their hearts lie and what they truly value. I feel that what we’re experiencing is a period time that potentiates a huge spiritual shift on this “sacred pilgrimage.” I’m praying for it. I’m looking for a time when people connect with their essential self and with that of others.

May journey year be joyful this year.

Meditation

Friday, March 27th, 2009

I teach mediation and people say to me, “I can’t meditate. I sit and all I do is get carried away with my thoughts.” That’s not surprising. You can’t  expect to sit down for the first time and “get it?” It’s like saying, “I haven’t brushed my teeth in 50 years, and I brushed for five minutes and my breath still stinks.” You sit and meditate because all you do is get carried away with your thoughts. Then, once you learn how to not be carried away by your mind, you must practice and reboot everyday… or more. The mind is very persuasive. However, it’s so worth the effort.

Meditation can be very elaborate, involving ritual activities and tools. Or, it can be very simple. To begin just focus on one thing: your breath, a chant, a flower, a flame, a sunrise… Focus only on the object or your breath and try not to get caught up in your thoughts. Your thoughts won’t stop. You’ll just learn not to follow them. At first you’ll probably focus for a second and then end up thinking about something else. So, when you notice you stop and focus again. You think about your mother. Stop and focus again. You think about work. As you continue to practice you will begin to notice when you’re carried away and have control over it. Soon you’ll be able to focus for 2 seconds, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, more. And, it keeps getting better.

Huge change may not happen overnight, but you will notice a change in yourself and your life when you meditate. It’s best to meditate everyday. Like doing exercise, when your body gets weak if you let up, your mind control will get weak and the mind will get cluttered if  you don’t meditate regularly. But soon you’ll notice that your life is moving more smoothly. You’re handling stress better. You’ll probably even feel better. You’ll accomplish more . . . Isn’t that worth 10 minutes a day?

Hope For The New World

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

One night during a difficult period of my cancer treatment I awoke from a seeming sleep and felt an extreme depth of aloneness and feel – the one that the elderly who are alone feel. Perhaps they have no medical care – or it’s not working; no suppport, or family or distant family. It felt like living in a black hole of pain and fear. I knew this was not my fear. I was seeing and feeling the pain and fear of others, and I was horrified and felt deep compassion for them. There are so many of these people living now. And there are going to be so many more.

The upcoming years are so important. Who will take care of them/us? Perhaps, our new administration will help us to solve the issues involved. But we all need to be actively looking at this important issue and finding ways to help our elders and to change our medical system so that it works for everyone.

My father has built senior citizen high rise buildings that offer medical care, transportation and activities for people living there. Each unit has its own kitchen and is very comfortable. Or, they can go down and dine with others. Some don’t want to move out of their homes. There is a great need for in-home care, visitation and transportation. Organizations are being formed that help these people. Or, perhaps we can build some. I’m open to suggestions.

Journaling On My Experiences With Cancer

Friday, August 29th, 2008

August 25, 2008
I just finished speaking with Darien and Darius, aka “The Fabulous Ones,” on their radio show and am so inspired. If you have a chance, check out blogtalkradio (www.DarimarEntetainment.com) on Monday nights, 9 pm EST. They are fun, delightful and insightful.

Tonight we talked a lot about how our lives are defined by our beliefs, and we also branched into some other topics. One of my favorites was how important the connection between all of us is. We so often get caught up in “What do I need to do to . . .”, or “What am I doing right or wrong.” We forget that we are all in this together, and if we are connecting soul-to-soul we are doing what we need to do and doing it right.

My father has Parkinson’s disease and he has a difficult time talking. He’ll say a few words and then there will be a long pause before he can finish his sentence. I’ve learned to be fully present with him during this silent time. He’s still there. So very there. And in this time I find that we’re even more connected than when we’re caught up in the words.

There have been so many people in my life lately who have shared their hearts with me and given me love and support. I cherish this love dearly. It has healed me and expanded me. We are all so unique and we are all one. It’s so fulfilling to experience this life knowing and living in this reality.

August 10, 2008:
I’ve been journeling my cancer journey at http://www.pinkmagazine.com/blog/breast_cancer08.html

Meanwhile:

Life has taken on a much different perspective, to say the least. I’ve heard others say it, but it’s so very true that the little things don’t matter as much any more. And there are really very few big things. We get so caught up in linear time, forgetting that time is not linear at all. It’s the space in between that matters most – the space and the people who fill it.

Some things I’m learning next:
Don’t count on using correct words when you’re on Valium and Demerol, though people tend to figure you out.
Love the body. It’s phenomenal. I’m amazed at how well it’s dealing with this major transition. What a miracle of life our spirit is housed in.
