Dealing with Painful Emotions & Thoughts

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Here are some tips to help you:
1. Please be kind to you. Realize that the situation is challenging. Emotional reverb is expected. Your emotions, like a sad child, will have a lot to say. Honor your feelings by noticing them and breathing through them. Let yourself calm yourself with your love and breath.

2. Download the limiting belief worksheet and the belief busting sheet from the bottom right side of my homepage (www.theawarenessinitiative.com). This will help you to pinpoint the beliefs that are supporting your pain. It will also help you to support that emotional child that is hurting right now.

3. Love the child and support her, but don’t honor the thoughts that are generated. Thoughts about what happened, what you did wrong, what will happen, what someone else did wrong, whether you’ll be able to handle this, how you SHOULD be …. are very unproductive.

The only way to deal with these thoughts is to stop thinking them. Don’t follow the train of thought. You have built a neuropath in your brain that you follow and you become it. Don’t follow it. Don’t become your thought. Drop the thought completely and return to your center. If you can’t do this meditate more often so that you learn how to not get caught up in the mind.

Meanwhile, there are other tricks: Think of something more productive. Think of anything else – things that aren’t relevant to the situation. Think about things you need to do or things you enjoy. Look around you and notice trees or flowers… or a Prada handbag, if that’s your thing. Look up at the sky. Think about your garden. Like a child, distract your mind from its obsessive, painful pattern.

There is nothing to be gained by thinking about painful issues. You can’t fix your pain this way. It’s a mind myth.

Honor the tremendous opportunity to build up your mind control muscles, and return to emotional support of yourself. Love you. And know, this too shall pass and you’ll be happier and stronger than you’ve ever been.

Self Actualization Insights

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

Chuck DesJardins, Ph.D., http://www.linkedin.com/in/drdesjardins, asked the following thought provoking question on LinkedIn:
“When you think of self-actualization, do you think of it as a person reaching their goals, or do you see it as a more deep soulish experience? Soulish, in the sense that the person who is self-actualizing is experiencing not only behavioral changes, but psychological and philosophical changes.”
FYI, here’s my answer:
If we are in touch with and being our essential self, we will proceed appropriately on our path. It may be rocky and challenging, but that doesn’t mean we’re not actualizing. It means we’re growing. Self actualization is a journey without end. The key to knowing if we’re on our path and moving in the right direction is trusting in our own knowing, gut, intuition and truth.

Taking time to pray

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Call it what you will, asking for what you need at a deep and profound level not only connects you to Source, it connects Source to self. You are also setting your intention or desire, making it not only clear to the energy around you, but clarifying it to yourself. Remember to “put it out there” instead of fretting. You will then “imbed it inside” at the same time, allowing you to take your dreams to heart.

The Dis-ease of trying to be liked

Friday, June 4th, 2010

The need to be liked creates dis-ease. Being “nice”, seeking acceptance, and trying to please others is a strategy – a way to feel safe in the world and worthy in our own skin. What is even more important to recognize is that seeking the approval of others is a way to avoid how deeply we disapprove of ourselves. The feared rejection of another is actually an outward reflection of how we have already rejected certain aspects of ourselves.

True peace and safety is discovered when we trust our own self  and know we have a lot to offer others just as we are.

Thanks to the Pet Shop Boys for the Wisdom

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Listened do an “oldey” the other day and realized that The Pet Shop Boys gave perfect advice on how to judge if something is working for you or not: “Oh, I missed it. The more that it hurts, the less that it works.”

Somewhere in time I was taught that pain means gain. After years of dealing with pain I have to say, and years of gain, this is dead wrong. I don’t agree that we have to experience pain to have gain. My gain was not proportional to my pain. I’m giving up this limiting belief and embracing a new belief: Joy leads to more joy. Success is born from doing what feels good, not what hurts.

I’m not saying that life isn’t full of challenges. They happen. I can and will learn the lessons and move on. But, I don’t have to buy into the pain and do what hurts in order to get to where I want to go. Instead, I prefer to do what feels right and good right now.

I am now creating a fulfilling and successful life one breath at a time. Starting now.

Holding it together … or not.

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

“How can I hold it together?”, he asked. The answer came on a whisper: “You can’t.” There’s nothing to hold together. Everything is expanding. It’s a time of transformation. Everything moves. You move. You smile, you breathe, you do what comes next with faith. You’ll float through stronger and wiser. Smile and you’ll find joy. Laugh and you’ll fly.

What’s Backing You Up?

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

My husband and I were calling a bank officer yesterday via conference mode and got her assistant. The assistant said she’d give the message to the officer with our phone number. My husband said, “Thanks. Goodbye.” The assistant hung up. No “goodbye” or closure. Nothing. Just click.

Dave said, “That really backs me up. Why can’t people have the courtesy to say, ‘Goodbye?’” I agreed, it would be kind and respectful to say “Goodbye.” However, I pounced on the phrase, “Backed me up.” It’s so spot on. It’s exactly what happens when we get upset with people or life in general. We take issue with something and it backs us up. We get out of present time and start ranting and raving internally (or externally for those more verbal), instead of moving on with our intended life.

Why isn’t life the way we think it should be? Why don’t people act the way we think they should? Why are there so many pebbles, rocks and walls in the road? Perhaps it’s so that we learn to not get backed up by them. It’s just the way it is. We have to deal with it. Stay with what is on our plate and don’t let these obstacles back us up.

How can we avoid it? Here are some tips. First, watch it happen and you’ll know how toxic self righteousness can be. Other ways I cope:

1. Laugh at it. Make a joke.

2. Have compassion. The assistant is either having a bad day or a bad life. She’s stuck somewhere. I send love.

3. Maintain my boundaries. Say to myself, “Sorry, you’re just not worth it.” My happiness is more important than getting irritated by you.

4. Evaluate myself. Note to self, “Hmm. I hope I don’t do that. I need to be conscious of that behavior and see if I do that. It could be a sign or a lesson.”

5. Focus on the present. Say to myself, “It’s not my problem.” Is it? Can I work around this? Is this what I want to focus on now?

There are many opportunities in life to grow. An abrupt assistant gave me the opportunity to notice something in life and share it with you.

Enjoy the ride.

Exciting Radio Show with the Kanes

Monday, April 5th, 2010

Join Deborah on Unlimited Success and Fulfillment radio on Friday at 1 pm, when she interviews Ariel and Shya Kane.

Deborah’s guests today are Ariel and Shya Kane. Internationally-acclaimed seminar leaders and award-winning authors, Ariel & Shya were avid seekers for many years until they ultimately discovered, over 20 years ago, that “Working on Yourself Doesn’t Work”…this is actually the title of their best-selling book, published by McGraw-Hill. This discovery led them not only to living a satisfying, fulfilling, stress-free life with consistency, but also to teaching thousands of people across the globe how to do this, as well. Their approach is based in awareness, which they define as a non-judgmental seeing of what is; when you live your life with awareness, the unconscious restrictions that limit your life can dissolve effortlessly.

The Kanes are masters of transformation, the ability to live in the moment and dissolve problems through awareness. Since 1987, they have inspired individuals and organizations across the globe, bringing people through the swamp of the mind, into the clarity and brilliance of the moment. The Kanes’ transformational approach has a unique flavor that is designed for modern day circumstances and complexities while resonating with universal truths of the ages. You can learn more about them and their award-winning books, seminars, and Excellence Club online community at www.TransformationMadeEasy.com.

Pat Yourself on the Back

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Life is all about lessons. A lot of them. We’re running an obstacle course, folks, and there are times when it’s not fun. There are times when we’re running along feeling the wind in our face, hurtling over those obstacles and climbing ladders with ease. Then there are days when the rain pours while we’re trudging up a muddy mountain. It’s cold, it’s windy… yuk! We’ve seen a lot of those rainy days and a lot of mud lately. That’s life.

And, we have the emotions to deal with. The emotions are referred to as a bunch monkeys in some Eastern religions. Those monkeys are up and down and all over the place. It’s very difficult, to impossible to control a bunch of monkeys. Your emotional monkeys may get a bit out-of-hand when the going is rough. Don’t beat yourself up over it. Comfort yourself like the challenged person that you are.

Just knowing that life is meant to be challenging can help you through the bad times. Here are other ways to handle stress:

1, Meditation is key. I can’t imagine getting through a difficult time without it. Meditation is to the mind/emotions/spirit as a shower is to the body. It also helps you to focus and center yourself in the challenging and not so challenging times.

2. Exercise is a legal way of drugging yourself. Yes, endorphins do work. You’ll also notice that you’ll feel happier when your body is healthy. (How emotionally bad did you feel when you had that flu?) So, do yourself a very big favor and start or continue exercising.

3. Eat properly. It’s tough enough handling some situations with a fit body. Don’t make it harder by giving yourself bad fuel. You need the energy and physical health to handle these times.

4. Sleep. Get 7-8 hours. OK, at least 6! You won’t make it up the mountain without sleep.

5. Call on your support systems. If you don’t have any (Oh, come on now, you do.) read an inspirational book or listen to motivating music or a tape.

6. Two effective tools for dealing with challenge are a positive attitude and faith – pure knowing and understanding – that things WILL GET BETTER.

When they do get better, pat yourself on the back for a journey well taken. In fact, pat yourself on the back when you’re feeling bad. Feel proud that you handled or are handling the mountain. You are birthing a life. If you are alive, you’re handling it. You’re doing it. That’s what life is all about. Doing it. Learning from it. Love yourself for having made the journey.

Of course, there are those spectacular views at the top of the mountain, too. Not to mention, cheesecake, hummingbirds, baby kisses, mountain streams . . .
