Skribit? What’s a Skribit?

Friday, June 26th, 2009

I want to take a moment to let you know about a recent addition to this blog. You may  have noticed a box on the left side of the page labeled “Skribit Suggestions.” Basically it is the old-fashioned idea of a suggestion box, but it has been brought up-to-date with Internet technology.

If you have an idea you’d like to discuss in this blog, or perhaps a question you’d like answered, you can submit it just by entering it through the Skribit box. You can also vote on suggestions made by others.

I began The Awareness Initiative Blog to help you to create a successful and fulfilling life. It is my hope that tools like Skribit offer new ways for you to participate in the blog; so I can better serve your needs and help more people on the road to transforming their lives.

Learning from “difficult” people

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Most of us meet or have people in our lives that we just don’t get along with – or even can’t stand to have around. These people seem like huge obstacles to our happiness. I’ve found myself thinking things like, “What is his problem?” Or, “Doesn’t she get how rude she is?” Or, some thoughts that are too harsh to share. Sometimes these people are truly harmful to me and need to be avoided. Others may be my own personal gurus.

Often the people I have the most difficulty are my next teachers. They have something to show me that I need to learn. If I avoid these people they show up again and again until I get that I have to learn to accept them. Learning to accept them means I have to change something within myself.

For example, someone who moves slowly may be the person who teaches me patience. I was exposed to several of these “patience” teachers for years – until I finally learned to relax, breathe and even talk to them. Sometimes I still need reminder teachers, such as the slow driver in front of me this morning.

Other people are irritating because they exhibit a behavior that I don’t like in myself. I still squirm when I meet demanding people. I know I’m not like them. OK. I’m just like them in some ways. There I said it, Mom.

Here are 4 steps that you can use to work with difficult people in your life:

1.     Determine if the person is a teacher or “trash” (not needed in your life). Avoid the trash and honor the teacher.

2.     Look at what bothers you about the person and see if you have some similar characteristics that you are not happy about within you. Learn to accept them in yourself and the other person won’t bother you.

3.     Honor your judgment. The assessment of the behavior may be accurate. Next, release the criticism of the behavior and see the person objectively. Once you do this you’ll be able to have compassion and work with him from another level of understanding. You’ll then be able to communicate with him better and work with him.

Sometimes I’m surrounded by people I love and enjoy. At other times I’m forced to spend time with someone who irritates me terribly. When I meet this person I internally thank him for the lesson I’m about to learn.

Truly Staying On Course

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

Somewhere between the charge to succeed and the giving up is the resignation to continue no matter the times or struggles. When you are destined to do what you love, and have found your true course, you have no choice but to keep moving forward.

There are times of struggle when you just want to take a break or move to an island somewhere. But, there is no escape. There is nothing that will feed you except being on course, doing what you love.

There are obstacles that seem unbearable. You stay your course – because you must or lose yourself – and realize that the obstacle was in you. You were the storm and you are the rescuer. The storm is no more. You are indeed the unsinkable vessel, and you know that the waves will swell again and again. With each challenge you rise higher and gain strength. A truth that seems unfathomable when the next storm rolls in.

When you do what you love you soar. Even your mistakes are stepping stones. You learn. You grow. You change. You change the world, the people around you, and they in turn change you back.

When you are destined to do what you love, and have found your true course, you have no choice but to keep moving forward. You are the path and the path is you. It’s all there is and the power and grace of it all is staggeringly, breathtakingly magnificent…and humbling.

How I Got Exactly What I Needed

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

I thought you might enjoy this true story about one of my real life manifestations involving intention, faith and grace:

Many years ago (long, long ago in a land … well, right here in Atlanta) I started a graphic design business. In the beginning there were the usual challenges, such as occasional cash flow issues (I hadn’t learned to set payment boundaries with my clients). I thought I had everything under control when an unexpected bill came in for $647. It was due in 3 weeks. I knew that my savings and income would not cover my expenses and that bill in that time period.

I had faith, though and knew that the money would come if I asked for it. I verbally and energetically projected that I needed $647 to come to me within 3 weeks. I didn’t want it to come from working in graphic design, as I was overbooked and couldn’t take on more work. I did want the money to come legally and ethically. I said, “I don’t know how you’re going to get me this money. I know I need it and have faith that you’ll arrange for it to come to me in time.” Then, I let it go.

I stopped thinking about my request. I put the bill away knowing it was going to be taken care of. Each time a doubt or fear arose I dismissed it and reaffirmed my belief that the money would come. And it did. Three days before the bill was due I received a check in the mail for $648 from a very unexpected source: A class action lawsuit settlement against an insurance company. I had not applied for the settlement, and in fact at the time did not know what class action settlements were. I had been automatically included in the settlement list and paid … Paid exactly what I asked for and when I needed it.

I know the law of attraction works, when we need something, define it, ask for it, clear all resistance, let it go and have faith. We are not alone and are supremely supported! I’m so very grateful.

Sometimes bigger IS better

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

Breaking through barriers usually requires a shift in thinking. I’ve spent my life trying to evolve to a place where money, power and fame were unimportant. I succeeded. I have no desire for money (for money’s sake), fame or power, though I do absolutely create a life of abundance. However, I discovered a loophole in this way of thinking.

In my avoidance of fame and power I kept the extent of my power and my influence small. I have now realized that the resistance to fame and power is counter to my goal and mission in life. What I want – what I thrive on – is assisting others through my coaching, counseling, speaking and teaching, to connect with their truth and transform their lives according to their essential nature. I yearn to reach out to all who would benefit from my guidance. Accomplishing this means getting “bigger” so that I reach more people – not resisting money, fame and power – allowing it without striving for it.

I will grow my business if I focus on doing what I enjoy and accomplishing my goal. Wealth can bring greater capacity to expand. As my power increases I can create more joy and transformation. The word can spread and I can be humble, sane AND BIG.

“Big” may be the result when we’re doing what we love. Allowing the expansion and growth will be the door that sets me free. The expansion also offers more transformation and joy for me, and more to offer others, as well.

Whew. Happy to blow past that one! More articles, blogs, podcasts, coaching, teaching, speaking … More, to come!!
