Supported by the Softer Side of Life

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Sometimes in the intensity of powerful creation and focus on the goal at hand we forget to notice everything else that’s happening around us. I’m calling this “everything else” the softer side of life – the hum of life moving beautifully as we forge our way forward.

I was flying to Las Vegas to be filmed on the Momentum stage at the Venetian. The video is a new rendition of my speaking and training capabilities that will be displayed on my website soon. I practiced and polished my speech for a week. I meditated on being effective and creating a powerful presentation. I fretted about scheduling and timing. My entire focus for a week was: PRESENTATION. I’ve thought about the fact that I’d be in Las Vegas for two days staying in a suite at the Venetian. But I did not live in that reality.

While on the plane meditating I intuitively heard, “Enjoy yourself, Deborah. Look around you. Everything else is happening as you focus only on your intent. Life surrounds you, and it’s a beautiful one at the moment. You’re headed for paradise to be with wonderful people and have new experiences. You may do well on your speech, and you may not. Everything happening around you influences where you are headed, not just the individual activities you’re attuned to. Pay attention to where you are and how lovely your life is. Pay attention to all that’s happening around you and enjoy it. Your attunement to this is the manna that will make your presentation sing.  Feel the fullness of the experience. Life is living and breathing around you. Tap into this and enjoy. That joy will radiate out and you’ll connect with your audience, no matter what you say.”

Good advice, and it worked fabulously. Suddenly I was relaxed and excited – enthusiastic and smiling. The planed arrived 35 minutes early (!) and I got a cab immediately, giving me more time to check-in, dress and practice a little more. The video experience with Blue Marble Media was incredibly fun, professional and exciting. I met wonderful people, had fun at Manhattan Momentum, and am now writing from my luxury suite after eating the delicious breakfast brought to my room.

I reiterate to you and to myself. Anything is possible and remarkable if done one step at a time. We can do anything we dream and have fun doing it. Life is supporting us – holding us softly in its embrace.

Investing in Yourself During the Recession

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Some of my clients have expressed concern about starting a new business or changing positions right now, with the recession in place. I see this as the perfect time to take your next step if it’s the right business for you. If you know in your heart, and see in your skills set, that you would do well in a specific business, don’t be afraid of doing it now. Everybody is restructuring now – relationships, self, businesses and lives. This is the time for it. Go with the flow and take advantage of this time of contemplation and restructuring.

The economy is down now, and that is the perfect time to invest. The best time to invest in stocks is when the market is down. This time of recession and realignment is a great time to invest in you. Plus, it’s a good time to start a business because things are moving slow. While things are moving slow you can establish the organization, direction, and plan now – establish your roots. When the economy picks up you’ll have everything lined up and ready for expansion. You’ll be ready for the surge when the economy, sales and business picks up.

Things to really focus on in business now are things that we’re moving into. It’s important to evaluate where the world is headed. Right now we’re headed into a time of greater value, honoring relationships, conserving the environment and energy, being healthy and valuing our recreational time. We’re letting go of keeping up with the amount of stuff the Jones’s had and learning to support the core values in our lives. Your business should aim to support those values.

I received an email from Carole Yancey about her recent life story, and I think it’s the perfect example of growing through tough times:

As Momma Nature you can bet I’ve found much solace in the natural world, after declaring two businesses plus my personal finances bankrupt in 2007! The natural world soothes, calms and releases us from worry, stress and the desire to overachieve.  I am using this first year after my new marriage to regroup and rethink where I am going. Where I am supposed to be is another wonder that simply amazes me.
Change is my middle name and thanks to many disasters in my life, this current recession is one of plenty and joy.  Dreaming comes more easily to me now that I no longer am struggling to run four businesses. My two children are grown and productive adults – both with steady jobs (THANK GOD) who appreciate the many sacrifices I had to make as a single (yet married) mother.

Life is WONDERFUL!
Smile – make everyone wonder what you are up to!

Suggestions from a recovering workaholic.

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

I have clients who admit that they’re perhaps workaholics and blame their job, their bosses, their life situations. They actually complain because they work so hard as if it’s unpleasant. ‘Workaholic’ does not mean you work too hard because you hate it. It means you love your work so much that you can’t stop doing it.

Think about it. Have you ever heard a beer drinking alcoholic say, “I hate beer”? Or, a sugar addict say, “I hate chocolate cake but I can’t help eating it?” No, “aholics” are addicted to doing what it is they are attached to. Workaholics are attached to working long hours each day, weekends, vacations … they can’t stop. If you work continuously and long hours and aren’t sure if you’re a workaholic ask your friends and family. If one person says “yes” believe that person. The others are being kind or evasive.

Addictions can’t be brought to a halt. They must be replaced. Leaving work early to “relax” probably won’t do it for you. You’ll go home, watch TV, pace the floor, text message … until you’re bored enough to start working again. Work has to be replaced with something else that adds joy to your life.

Many workaholics have forgotten what it is they enjoy. If this is the case make plans with friends. You may not be doing what you love, but you’ll be distracted long enough to get a breath in and feel what it’s like to not work.

Here are some other steps for finding fun things to do:

1.    Think back – way back – to when you weren’t working. What did you do then? Was photography your hobby? Did you enjoy reading novels, cuddled up with a cup of tea? Remember when reading was a good thing – even if you weren’t reading a self or business help book?

2.    Experiment with things you’ve thought about trying, or been meaning to do. Take the Spanish class. Learn how to play tennis. Dance. You’ll probably have to schedule these things in so that you don’t work through them. Mark them as sacred appointments to your yearning to be non-addicted self.

3.    Write down the things you plan on doing when you retire. Do them now.

4.    Exercise. Just do it. You’ll love it soon. I promise.

5.    Meditate to become aware of who you are when you’re not working. Love that person. Release any guilt you feel for having fun and enjoying your life.

A healthy life is one that’s balanced. It’s wonderful that you love what you do. And you do if you’re a workaholic. Now find out what else you love and do that as well. You’ll find you enjoy your work and your life even more.
